SHEFFIELD STEELERS 5 KITMART DUNDEE STARS 4

The Kitmart Dundee Stars pushed the Sheffield Steelers all night long but eventually lost out by just one goal in a tight Elite League clash in Yorkshire.

By Kris Smith

Saturday night in Sheffield began with a scoreless first period, but the Steelers soon opened the scoring through Tanner Eberle, as he netted on the powerplay in the 24th minute.

The Canadian was the quickest to react and turned home the rebound from Evan Mosey’s shot from close-range.

However, Toms Rutkis drew Dundee level just four minutes later, with a quick shot from the slot and Charlie Combs then fired the Stars ahead just 90 seconds after that, as he danced through multiple defenders before beating Barry Brust up high.

Although, the home side would net the equaliser through Evan Mosey on 31 minutes, when he drove towards goal and slammed home a loose puck to make it 2-2.

The Steelers would then regain the lead on 37 minutes after Eberle scored on a penalty shot, which was awarded because he was held back by Spencer Dorowicz as he broke towards goal.

Going into the third period, the Stars only took two minutes to make it a 3-3 game, as Philippe Sanche found a way to deflect the shot of Combs past Barry Brust, but less than two minutes after that, Adrian Saxrud Danielsen beat Adam Morrison to make it 4-3 Sheffield.

Then Dundee found their fourth goal of the night on 47 minutes, as Rutkis netted once again, by jamming home a loose rebound but that would be their final goal, as Matias Sointu went on to bag the game winning goal on 50 minutes.

The Finn was able to turn in the shot of Keaton Ellerby as the low effort deflected off his skates and past Adam Morrison.

The Stars came up just short on a big night in Sheffield but had no time to dwell, as they hosted Guildford Flames at home on Sunday.
